Chinese Snuff Bottles

Chinese Snuff Bottle

Chinese, Snuff Bottle with Boys in a Landscape (detail), late 18–19th century. Bequest of William T. Walters.

Visitors can marvel at these small wonders, delicately crafted from stone, glass, porcelain, ivory, lacquer, enamel, and precious metals. Among the most breathtaking examples are “inside-painted” snuff bottles, with calligraphy or landscapes painted by inserting a tiny brush in the bottle’s interior.

This installation is organized in conjunction with the 50th Annual Convention of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, which will be held in Baltimore. The objects that will be on view in the Treasury, located off of the Italian-style Palazzo.

Chinese Snuff Bottles is generously supported by the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society and by the Walters Art Museum’s members and contributors to the annual fund.
