Cold Life is on view in Across Asia: Arts of Asia and the Islamic World.

This work by teamLab—a digital collective of programmers, designers, and animators—reflects the long-standing importance of nature in East Asian art and culture. This time-based animation allows the character for “life” to grow and blossom for the viewers in a way that static art cannot. Here technology is used to explore idealized botanical subject matter and how flowers, trees, butterflies, and the full moon provide solace and respite from a chaotic world. Cold Life explores themes related to the natural world that continue to inspire artists in new ways.
