Volunteering at the Walters

As a Walters volunteer, you can contribute the gift of your time and skills to create a place where people of every background can be touched by art. We are looking for dynamic and engaging individuals to join our team of passionate volunteers. Several types of volunteer opportunities are available. Read below to discover which one best fits your interests and volunteer goals.

What can you do as a volunteer at the Walters?

Welcome

In this role, you’ll welcome visitors to the museum and serve as a supportive resource throughout their visit.

You may enjoy this role if…

  • You like to engage with and talk to people.
  • You want visitors to feel excited about and connected to the Walters.
  • You have a customer service mindset.

Explore

In this role, you’ll activate a Discovery Station that connects Pre-K–12 students with art-making techniques, cultural themes, and materials. We are seeking more volunteers interested in this role.

  • You like hands-on activities and art making.
  • You prefer to stand or sit in one place.
  • You enjoy working with visitors of all ages, including families, school groups, and adults.

Host

In this role, you’ll spark curiosity and fun in the galleries through different modes of conversation and facilitation.

You will enjoy this role if…

  • You can hold different levels of conversation with ease, from informal chats to deeper dialogues.
  • You prefer to walk around the galleries as you work.
  • You enjoy working with visitors of all ages, including families, school groups, and adults.

Evaluate

In this role, you’ll encourage visitors to share their feedback and comments.

You will enjoy this role if…

  • You value feedback and evaluation data.
  • You are comfortable approaching visitors for interviews, surveys, or collecting standardized observations.
  • You have experience or knowledge of data collection and research methods (but this is not required!).

Represent

In this role, you’ll support off-site community engagement events and share what the Walters has to offer with the broader Baltimore community.

Create

In this role, you’ll support on-site art making programs and events.

What else do I need to know?

Walters volunteers must…

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Commit to six months of service, with a minimum of four volunteer hours per month.
