Recurrence

September 19, 2007–January 20, 2008

As a complement to the special exhibition Deja Vu?: Revealing Repetition in French Masterpieces, this focus show will draw together works from the Walters’ Egyptian, ancient Greek, and Asian collections that reveal image reuse and repetition. Visitors will be invited to explore the ways in which artists from different places and time periods returned time and again to the same trusted imagery. Equipped with the knowledge gained through these observations, visitors will be encouraged to visit the permanent collection galleries in search of similar repetitions and re-expressions of the themes they have just seen. A series of brief recorded messages will enrich visitors’ experience as they consider the many ways that humans have copied, repeated, reused, and reflected upon images that are central to their societies.
