Baltimore—The Walters Art Museum presents Jacob Lawrence’s Genesis Series, September 14, 2013–April 13, 2014. Each of the eight works on view in the exhibition describes a passage from the book of Genesis in the King James Version of the Holy Bible.

“Jacob Lawrence is one the nation’s most celebrated 20th century artists and a key interpreter of the African-American experience,” said Jacqueline Copeland, deputy director for audience engagement. “Museum visitors will have the opportunity to explore the vibrancy of the artist’s work in his strong sense of color and expressive figures,” she added.

Lawrence is known for using a series format to render colorful expressive imagery. The series reflects Lawrence’s youthful memories of passionate sermons about the creation given by ministers at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem where he was baptized in 1932.

The Genesis Series has been generously loaned from Eddie and Sylvia Brown’s private collection in Baltimore.

About the Walters Museum

The Walters Art Museum is located in downtown Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon Cultural District at North Charles and Centre Streets. At the time of his death in 1931, museum founder Henry Walters left his entire collection of art – including a legendary collection of illuminated medieval manuscripts that is a national treasure – to the city of Baltimore. Between 1895 and 1931, Walters collected around 730 codices.  Its permanent collection includes ancient art, medieval art and manuscripts, decorative objects, Asian art and Old Master and 19th-century paintings.
