Art + Film: Connecting Bao and Asian Art
Popular short film Bao (2018), directed by Domee Shi, explores food, identity, and community—themes that are reflected in several objects in our collections of Asian and Islamic art. In this program, we will screen Bao, and Associate Curator of Asian Art Dany Chan will introduce the film and highlight collection connections. We will also share a preview of the momentous transformation of our galleries for the Spring 2023 installation of Across Asia: Arts of Asia and the Islamic World. We look forward to sharing what’s behind the curtain for next year!

Film Synopsis: “An aging Chinese mom suffering from empty nest syndrome gets another chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings springs to life as a lively, giggly dumpling boy. Mom excitedly welcomes this new bundle of joy into her life, but Dumpling starts growing up fast, and Mom must come to the bittersweet revelation that nothing stays cute and small forever. This short film from Pixar Animation Studios and director Domee Shi explores the ups and downs of the parent-child relationship through the colorful, rich, and tasty lens of the Chinese immigrant community in Canada.”
