The jewel-like colors of historical manuscript illuminations are both dazzling and deadly. In the process of creating their books, scribes, artists, and binders unknowingly exposed themselves to highly toxic materials such as lead, arsenic, mercury, and even early forms of pesticides used to preserve manuscripts. Join Lynley Anne Herbert, Robert and Nancy Hall Curator of Rare Book and Manuscripts, and Annette Ortiz, Conservation Scientist, as they discuss their work on If Books Could Kill, a new exhibition that sheds light on the hidden dangers within the Walters’ rich collection of manuscripts and reveals the science behind identifying these toxic materials and managing them safely today.
Collection Connections is a series of onsite and virtual behind-the-scenes experiences with the Walters collection exclusively for supporters of the museum. Registration is required as space is limited. Look for additional details about upcoming supporters-only events on our events calendar and in your inbox.
This month’s program will stream live from the Graham Auditorium at the Walters. Join us online or in person.
