Join us for an off-site screening of videos highlighting local creatives who bring an expanded perspective to the objects on view in Latin American Art / Arte Latinoamericano, a new exhibition opening May 17 at the Walters Art Museum. In this event, which takes place at Creative Alliance, watch short videos featuring musician and artist Melissa Foss, chocolate maker Jinji Fraser, chef Carlos Raba, and online radio host María Luz Coca Luján backed by live musical performance from Bryita and Sayra aka Alucarda, followed by a conversation about the diverse stories that connect art from the ancient Americas with Baltimore talent.
About the Performers
Bryita is a Peruvian-American artist highlighting BIPOC joy, struggle, solidarity, and revolution in their works. From a queer, Indigenous, and nonbinary lens, they share sounds reflective of their personal relationship to healing. Their music is a modern contemporary take on Peruvian folk with traditional Andean instruments such as the charango and zampoña. They are a self-taught musician influenced by their grandfather’s zampoña and quena playing through the Andes Mountains in Peru.
Sayra aka Alucarda is a queer Mexican DJ and musician based in Baltimore. A member of the Ghetto Witchez collective, she strives to showcase sounds from the Latine and Afro-Caribbean diaspora. A multi genre DJ and multi instrumentalist, she loves layering sounds and rhythms together that reflect her wide array of influences. At the heart of her practice is a genuine love and respect for the historically Black origins of house, club, and techno music as well as other POC genres and artists. Her creative approach is steeped in community and the idea of release through music.
