Artist, performer, and educator Karol Martinez discusses works in our installation Latin American Art / Arte Latinoamericano through a LGBTQ+ lens with Ellen Hoobler, William B. Ziff, Jr., Curator of Art of the Americas.

Queering the Collection is an in-gallery program series that invites artists and scholars to participate in conversations that connect queer-identifying perspectives with artistic and art-historical knowledge about works in our collection. Speakers will discuss works of art in our galleries, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

About the Artist

Karol Martinez (they/them/theirs) serves as the Assistant Director of Graduate Student Pathways, Inclusion, & Success at Johns Hopkins University where they support graduate student initiatives. They were born in Managua, Nicaragua but grew up in Miami, FL. They are a queer, non-binary, Latinx immigrant, first-generation college student, and a Gates Millennium Scholar. At the core, their work has centered around community, equity, and social justice so that everyone can have access to a successful and fulfilling life. Karol has served on the governing board of ACPA College Student Educators International and has also been involved with the Maryland College Personnel Association, LeaderShape, the Baltimore Collegetown Network, the Baltimore County Board of Elections.
