Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s story is one of triumph. He was stricken with tuberculosis as a teenager and given only a short time to live. He spent what were considered his remaining days drawing and painting, but he somehow recovered. He continued to pursue art and was encouraged to depict historical scenes by his teachers. He became fascinated with creating images of early Egyptian, Greek, and Roman life, for which he became famous. Originally from the Netherlands, Alma-Tadema worked primarily in England, where he received many awards and was eventually knighted. Later, Hollywood looked to Alma-Tadema’s paintings for set design inspiration. Scenes in movies such as Ben-Hur, Gladiator, and Cleopatra were directly inspired by his work. Today, interest in Alma-Tadema is having a resurgence, and this presentation will spotlight the artist’s working technique in two of his paintings. Join Pamela Betts, Senior Paintings Conservator, for this virtual presentation to learn more about Alma-Tadema’s work.
