Translations and Transitions / Traducciones y Transiciones: A Celebration of Mexican and Central American Independence (1821–2021)

The Walters Art Museum commemorates Mexican and Central American independence from Spain with this exhibition exploring the cultural exchange between Indigenous and European peoples. Focusing on the many vibrant and sophisticated Indigenous societies that flourished over thousands of years in what is today Mexico and Central America, this small but rich exhibition features 17 works of art including books, gold adornments, and ceramic vessels. It also features an original painting by Mexican-American artist René Treviño, which seeks to reclaim Indigenous astronomical knowledge through a creative reimagining of 16th-century European star charts.

El Walters Art Museum conmemora la independencia Mexicana y Centroamericana de España con esta exposición, la cual explora el intercambio cultural entre pueblos Indígenas y Europeos. Enfocado en las muchas dinámicas y sofisticadas sociedades Indígenas que florecieron durante miles de años en el Mexico y Centroamérica actual, esta exposición, pequeña pero rica, se enfoca en 17 obras de arte, incluyendo libros, adornos de oro, y vasijas cerámicas. También incluye una pintura original del artista Mexicano-Americano René Treviño, la cual busca recuperar la sabiduría Indígena de la astronomía, a través de una reinvención creativa de los diagramas estelares europeos del siglo XVI.
Esta exposición ha contado con la curaduría de Ellen Hoobler, curadora asociada William B. Ziff, Jr., de arte de las Américas, con Lynley Herbert, curadora de libros y manuscritos raros y presidenta de curaduría.
