Japanese Woodblock Prints: The Art of Collaboration

Shigeharu, A Courtier on Horseback, ca. 1821-1841, mulberry paper, color, ink, Bequest of Robert S. Shaull, 1990 (The Walters Art Museum, 95.310)
Japanese woodblock prints are often credited to individual artists like Hokusai and Hiroshige. However, these celebrated and beautiful works of art are the products of masterfully orchestrated collaborations among publishers, artists, carvers, and printers; their distinct roles are explored in this exhibition.
Japanese Woodblock Prints: The Art of Collaboration is made possible by the generous support of our members and contributors to the annual fund. Major support has been provided by the Women’s Committee of the Walters Art Museum.
