Join us in historic Mount Vernon for a walking tour of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, the Maryland Center for History and Culture, and the Walters Art Museum. This tour, held on February 20, 2025 from 1–3:30 p.m. will focus on primary sources related to African-American art and history and the contributions of Black Marylanders. Interested in a career that combines science and art? Join us for a tour guided by conservators and scientists in the Department of Conservation, Collections, and Technical Research. You will learn about the work being done to preserve the Walters collection and will visit three conservation laboratories. Tours will be offered the weeks of March 13 and March 27, 2025. January-March: Take a tour of Art and Process: Drawings, Paintings, and Sculptures from the 19th-Century Collection with Jo Briggs, Jennie Walters Delano Curator of 18th- and 19th-Century Art. This tour will cover the artistic process of Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1795–1875), Jean-François Millet (French, 1814–1875), Camille Pissarro (French, 1831–1903), Alfred Sisley (French and British, 1839–1899). Perfect for art students! Times are to be coordinated after receipt of an email expressing interest. Capacity: 15 participants.
January-August: Take a tour of If Books Could Kill with Lynley Herbert, Robert and Nancy Hall Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts. This in-depth discussion will focus on the toxic materials used to paint manuscript illuminations that span cultures, geographies, and time periods and how employees in the art museum handle and care for these poisonous tomes. Times are to be coordinated after receipt of an email expressing interest. Capacity: 15 participants.
January-May: The museum’s stellar collection has been drawing in visitors for decades. Join Gina Borromeo, Interim Co-Director, on a tour to see some of the objects that lured her to work at the Walters and others that have piqued her curiosity since arriving here. Works discussed will come from around the globe and range in date from antiquity to the present day. Times are to be coordinated after receipt of an email expressing interest. Love art and museums? Thinking of working in cultural heritage? Meet with staff members of the Walters and hear about the varied journeys that led them to careers in the museum world. Perfect if you are curious about museum jobs and how to prepare for them. A Career Panel will be offered the week of March 3. Times to be coordinated after receipt of email expressing interest. Curious about what it takes to catalog and take care of the art and provide access to visitors? Meet with staff members in the Registrar’s Office, the Library, and in Visitor Experience to hear about how we care for the collection, support research, and support public access to the art of the Walters. Hear about their various journeys that led them to careers in the museum world. Perfect for students planning on applying for a 2025 Summer Internship. Are you studying art education? Consider teaching Sketching Sessions, a program in which we invite members of the public to join us for an evening of drawing in the galleries with light art instruction. Apply by submitting a resume, a faculty letter of recommendation, and a draft lesson plan. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
Are you a musician looking for a chance to perform in public? Accompany this gallery drawing program for 45 minutes as a soloist or for the entire 90 minutes as part of a duet. Apply by submitting a resume and recording of a performance sample. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
