The Walters Art Museum relies on the dedication and commitment of volunteers who support the mission of the museum. As a Walters volunteer, you can contribute your time and skills to create a place where people of every background can be touched by art.

We are looking for dynamic and engaging individuals to join our team of passionate volunteers. Several types of volunteer opportunities are available. Read below to discover which one best fits your interests and volunteer goals.

What can you do as a volunteer at the Walters?

Want to engage more deeply with visitors of the Walters? Are you wondering what you can do as a volunteer at the museum?

Welcome

In this role, you’ll welcome visitors to the museum and serve as a supportive resource throughout their visit.

You may enjoy this role if…

  • You like to engage with and talk to people.
  • You want visitors to feel excited about and connected to the Walters.
  • You have a customer service mindset.
  • You enjoy helping others.

Your required training will cover…

  • Visitor experience basics.
  • Permanent collection highlights.
  • Accessibility awareness.
  • Public programs support.

You will be required to…

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Commit to 6 months of service, with a minimum of 4 volunteer hours per month.

Explore

In this role, you’ll activate an interactive station that connects visitors with artists, cultural themes, and materials.

You may enjoy this role if…

  • You like hands-on activities and art making.
  • You want an introduction to the Walters collection.
  • You prefer to stand or sit in one place.
  • You enjoy working with visitors of all ages, including families, school groups, and adults.

Your required training will cover…

  • An onboarding session focusing on group facilitation.
  • Monthly meetings that build on content and themes.

Host

In this role, you’ll spark curiosity and fun in the galleries through different modes of conversation and facilitation.

You will enjoy this role if…

  • You can hold different levels of conversation with ease, from informal chats to deeper dialogues.
  • You want to learn about the Walters collection in depth.
  • You prefer to walk around the galleries as you work.
  • You enjoy working with visitors of all ages, including families, school groups, and adults.

Your required training will cover…

  • An onboarding session focusing on facilitation.
  • Monthly meetings that build on content and themes.
  • A moment to share your knowledge with others.

Evaluate

In this role, you’ll encourage visitors to share their feedback and comments.

You will enjoy this role if…

  • You value feedback and evaluation data.
  • You are comfortable approaching visitors for interviews, surveys, or collecting standardized observations.
  • You have experience or knowledge of data collection and research methods (but not required!).

Your required training will cover…

  • Data collection methods.
  • Project-specific training.

Represent

In this role, you’ll support off-site community engagement events and share what the Walters has to offer with the broader Baltimore community.

You will enjoy this role if…

  • You are a community builder.
  • You like attending festivals or tabling at events.
  • You want to engage people through art making activities.
  • You can connect community members with program offerings.

Your required training will cover…

  • One onboarding session on Walters ambassador guidelines.
  • Public and conversational speaking.
