Tips for a Successful Visit
Tour Fees
- Maryland students: FREE; a voluntary contribution of $2 per student will help us sustain educational programs for Maryland students.
- Maryland chaperones: Two chaperones per 10 students are admitted at no charge. Extra chaperones must pay $7 each.
- Out-of-state students: $2 per child for guided school tours.
- Out-of-state chaperones: $2 per chaperone within the 2:10 student ratio. Extra chaperones must pay $7 each.
- Receipts can only be issued before or after your museum visit. Email schoolprograms@thewalters.org to request a receipt.
Prior to your Visit
- Review your confirmation letter for accuracy and notify the museum at schoolprograms@thewalters.org of any changes.
- A museum educator will contact you prior to your scheduled visit to discuss your needs.
- Before entering the museum, separate your students into small color-coded groups. The number of groups is indicated on your confirmation letter.
- Please provide nametags for students and chaperones.
- Review Teacher Resources
- Print out The Art of Chaperoning section below and distribute to all chaperones.
- Make sure you have completed everything on the "Checklist."
Arrival Information
- Students must disembark the buses on the south side of Centre Street (between Charles and Cathedral) only. For safety, buses are prohibited from stopping on Charles Street. An alternative unloading zone is located on the south side of the circle at the Washington Monument.
- All school groups must enter at the Charles Street entrance, unless other arrangements have been made with the museum (see accessibility). Groups will be met by their docents upon entering the museum.
Self-guided Tour Information
- Self-guided vists are available Wednesday through Friday, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
- Self-guided visits MUST be scheduled in advance. Click here to register.
Museum Guidelines
- Guided and self-guided tours must be accompanied by chaperones at all times. Guided tours require one chaperone for every 10 students. Self-guided tours require one chaperone for every five students. Chaperones must stay with groups at all times.
- Works of art may not be touched. An arms length rule is in place to protect both the art and the visitor.
- Inside voices are encouraged at all times. Screaming, shouting, or yelling is not allowed.
- Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
- No eating, drinking, or gum chewing.
- Only pencils may be used for writing or sketching in the galleries.
- Backpacks, books, radios, ipods and other audio equipment, and umbrellas are not permitted in the galleries. The Walters is not responsible for anything left in the museum.
- The use of cameras is strongly discouraged.
- Please turn off cell phones while on guided tours.
Late Arrival and Cancellation Policy
- Groups that arrive late will receive a condensed tour. Groups arriving more than 20 minutes late will be unable to receive a guided tour.
- If you have to cancel your visit, please email schoolprograms@thewalters.org or call 410-547-9000, ext. 232 or 298 immediately so that volunteer docents may be informed. Fees are non-refundable.
Inclement Weather Policy
- If your school district has a delay or closure due to weather, your tour will automatically be canceled. We will attempt to reschedule your tour, however there are no guarantees.
Accessibility
- Please indicate any special needs on the tour registration form.
- Notify the museum in advance if a wheelchair accessible entrance is necessary.
- The museum will provide sign language interpreters with three weeks advance notice.
Lunch Facilities
- Since the museum has no group lunch facilities on the premises, all food and drink must be left on school buses while students are touring.
- Surrounding parks provide excellent picnic areas.

- Parking:
- Bus parking: Free bus parking is available on Guilford Avenue. Continue down Centre Street, make a right on Guilford Avenue, and than an immediate right into the 'Baltimore Sunpapers' old service drive.
- Car Parking: All lots are paid lots, ranging from $6-$10. Lots can be found at Centre and Cathedral streets, Centre and St. Paul streets, and West Franklin Street between Charles and Cathedral. Metered street parking is also available.
