Painter Jacob Lawrence is known for using a series format to render in colorful expressive imagery and text the narrative stories of historical African American figures like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman. Each of the eight works on view in Jacob Lawrence's Genesis Series (1990) describes a passage from the book of Genesis in the King James version of the Bible.

These handmade, individual and highly personal objects were made not only to protect the texts they contained, but also to be admired and appreciated as portable decorative masterpieces in their own right.

Monuments Man: The Walters' Marvin Chauncey Ross

Michael Kurtz, National Archives expert, recounts how the “Monuments Men” tracked and located nearly five million European artworks and cultural treasures stolen by Hitler and the Nazis during WWII. Among them was Marvin Chauncey Ross (1904–1977), the Walters’ first Curator of Medieval Art and Subsequent Decorative Arts. Joining him is Melissa Wertheimer, Walters’ archives assistant, who will share her fascinating discoveries while researching the Marvin Ross papers at the Walters.

Learning by Watching: Andean Textiles and the Fabric of Culture

Andean textile specialist Dr. Anne Tiballi, the Andrew W. Folger Consort Performs A Renaissance Christmas: Music of Flanders and Italy circa 1500

The Folger Consort, the early music ensemble-in-residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library since 1977, will present A Renaissance Christmas: Music of Flanders and Italy circa 1500, a 90-minute concert featuring vocalists, winds, and strings. This premiere performance is inspired by the Walters’ Madonna and Child with Angels, currently on view in our Italian Galleries. You won’t want to miss this special holiday program performed on the beautiful Sculpture Court.
