China Seen by the Chinese: The Emergence of Documentary Photography as a Fine Art

WHAT: China Seen By the Chinese: The Emergence of Documentary Photography as a Fine Art
Center for East Asian Art, Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University, Jerome Silbergeld, Professor of Chinese Art History and Director, P.Y. and Kinmay W. Tang

Chinese cinema rose to international prominence in the 1990s, its avant-garde painting and photography after 2000, and now Chinese documentary photography is arriving on the scene. Documentary photography is an old medium in China, yet Chinese photographers’ view of their own land and people is new. At issue is continuing government censorship, how to best read these images in a cross-cultural setting and what “documentary” means in an artistic context. This talk is based on the first exhibition of this photographic art in America, as organized by Jerome Silbergeld.
