Sacred Ground: New York City’s African Burial Ground
When Manhattan’s African Burial Ground was discovered, few people thought it necessary to preserve this cemetery. Writer and photographer Karen Juanita Carrillo will talk about how its close proximity to Ground Zero has encouraged preservation of this sacred ground as a place worthy of veneration.

This lecture is presented by Karen Juanita Carrillo, a New York-based writer and photographer, focusing primarily on African American and Afro-Latino issues. She operates the website Afropresencia.com. In 2002, she was awarded the National Newspapers Publishers Association’s “Perspective Reporting Award” for human-interest coverage of the impact of September 11, highlighting diverse perspectives in African American communities.
