This session entitled Buddhist Relics and Mandalas: The Case of the Famensi Reliquaries in Tang China features Michelle C Wang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
Analyzing the famed 9th century nesting reliquaries of Famensi (Dharma Gate Monastery), located in Fufeng, Shaanxi Province, China, Wang’s lecture will probe the connections between Buddhist relics and reliquaries with mandalas (diagrammatic representations of Buddhist deities and cosmology), while exploring the historical resonance of relics and reliquaries in China.
