The Mother Prayed, The Daughter Felt Relief: Women, Motherhood & Pilgrimage in Late Medieval Europe

Medieval stories recounting miracles at the shrines of the saints suggest that women frequently sought healing for their injured or ailing children, thereby gaining social and cultural power from their brushes with the miraculous.

Leigh Ann Craig, author of Wandering Women and Holy Matrons: Women as Pilgrims in the Later Middle Ages (Brill, 2009) and Associate Professor of History at Virginia Commonwealth University will show how women’s roles as mothers could justify these pilgrimage travels.
