This session entitled The Ancestral Veneration and Artistic Transcendence: Reliquary Traditions from Central Africa features Alisa LaGamma, Curator in the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Embraced in the West a century ago by modernists for their formal dynamism, many of the celebrated masterpieces of central African sculpture were created to amplify the power of sacred relics that affirm a family’s vital connection to its ancestral heritage. This lecture will illuminate the original inspiration for these highly influential works so that their significance both in the equatorial region and beyond may be more fully appreciated.
