Senior paintings conservator Karen French shares insights into J.M.W. Turner’s breathtaking Raby Castle (1817)—one of the English artist’s earliest explorations of the interplay of light and clouds. Close study and conservation of the painting have revealed Turner’s major reworking of the composition, hidden under repainting.
