The consumption of wine entangled the ancient Gauls (inhabitants of present-day France and Belgium) and their Roman colonizers in complex and unanticipated ways, economically and politically. Michael Dietler of the University of Chicago will explore the role wine played in a series of encounters between the Gauls and the Etruscans, Greeks, and Romans who traded with them beginning in the 7th century BC. Reception to follow.
