Gary Vikan will give one of his last lectures as Director of the Walters Art Museum and discuss his new book, The Shroud of Turin. The lecture will conclude at the Walters Art Museum. Gary Vikan was named Director of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore in 1994, and was appointed by President Clinton to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee, becoming the American Association of Museum Directors’ representative to the Presidential Advisory Commission on Holocaust Assets in the United States. Hear Vikan in one of his final lectures as Director of the Walters, speaking on his new book, The Shroud of Turin, along with changes in life, art and culture. The audience will have the opportunity to walk to the Walters with Dr. Vikan for concluding remarks and a private tour.

This event will begin at the First & Franklin Presbyterian Church, 210 West Madison Street, Baltimore. General admission to this event is $15, $5 for students with I.D. Tickets are available online from firstfranklin.org or at the door.

Collateral Damage: The Fate of Cultural Property during Armed Conflict

The 2003 looting of the Iraq National Museum shocked the world. But despite new efforts to save world treasures, the loss of cultural property during armed conflicts is on the rise. Corine Wegener, Smithsonian Cultural Heritage Preservation Officer, will talk about her work as a U.S. Army “Monuments Man” in Iraq. Terry Drayman-Weisser, the Walters’ Director of Conservation and Technical Research, will describe damage to Iraq’s ancient Nimrud ivories and continuing efforts to preserve Iraq’s cultural heritage.
