The third film in our three-part Egyptomania Film Series, Agora is a historical drama set in Roman Egypt.  The story centers on philosopher and mathematician Hypatia (Rachel Weisz).  Set in the last days of the Roman Empire, Agora tells the story of a city at war, Alexandria, and it’s people, torn between religion and science, on the brink of a new era. Dr. Moulie Vidas, Assistant Professor of Religion and the Program in Judaic Studies at Princeton, will lead a lively discussion after the film.

About the Speaker

Dr. Moulie Vidas,  Assistant Professor of Religion and the Program in Judaic Studies at Princeton University, leads a discussion after the film  He joined the Princeton faculty in 2012. His book, Tradition and the Formation of the Talmud, is forthcoming from Princeton University Press, and his current projects include a monograph on the emergence of Talmudic culture in Roman Palestine and a collection of essays on late ancient knowledge co-edited with Catherine Chin.

Ikebana Floral Demonstration by Ikebana International

Held in conjunction with our special exhibition Designed for Flowers: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics, this program, one in a series of three, will feature masters from Ikebana International demonstrating the art of Ikebana for a live audience. Ikebana, a traditional form of artistic expression, combines organic material, most notably flowers, and specially chosen vessels, as seen in the special exhibition, into works of art that are aesthetically unique to Japanese culture.
