Join John Tegler, the host of WEAA's Jazz Straight Ahead, as he moderates a conversation on the enduring legacy of the music that makes up the foundation of jazz. The great bandleaders of the 1930's--Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway and many more--and the songwriters--Rodgers and Hart, Gershwin, Cole Porter and others--were the architects of jazz. Their music continues to be reinterpreted by the youngest musicians entering the scene today. We'll explore who those artists were, what informed their writing and playing, and how their music influenced popular culture, from Broadway to Hollywood. 

Panelists include Dr. Anthony Villa, Director of Music in the Department of Fine Arts at Loyola University Maryland and founder of the Baltimore Jazz Alliance Big Band; Dr. John R. Lamkin, II, Director of Bands and the Coordinator of Music Education in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore; and Larry Willis, renowned jazz pianist and composer. The conversation will be followed by a jam session featuring our panelists performing songs from the Great American Songbook. 

This event is a continuation of WEAA's Lecture Series bringing conversations on the arts to the community.

Collecting Histories and Collecting Mysteries: Great Art Collectors of America's Gilded Age

Inge Reist will bring alive the personalities of Gilded Age collectors as they formed some of America’s most dazzling and admired collections. Her talk will also explore their motivations and methods of acquisition, as well as their philanthropic legacies. Reist is Director of the Center for the History of Collecting at the Frick Collection and Frick Art Reference Library.
