Opening Day Talk: Egypt's Mysterious Book of the Faiyum

The Book of the Faiyum is an exquisitely illustrated papyrus from Greco-Roman Egypt. This mysterious text provides a map-like representation of the Faiyum oasis, a region west of the Nile renowned in antiquity for its worship of the crocodile god, Sobek. For the first time in over 150 years, this exhibition reunites sections of the book owned by the Walters Art Museum and the Morgan Library & Museum, which have been separated since the papyrus was divided and sold in the 19th century. This opening lecture interprets the Book of the Faiyum as an attempt to establish a powerful and unique local identity for the Faiyum region—and a testament to the endurance of traditional religious iconography in ancient Egypt.

About the Speaker

Dr. Marden Nichols, Assistant Curator of Ancient Art for the Walters Art Museum, and curator of the exhibition Egypt’s Mysterious Book of the Faiyum, has been with the museum since 2011. Dr. Nichols received her BA/MA from Stanford University and PhD from the University of Cambridge (2009). With this exhibition, Dr. Nichols brings together nearly one hundred works of ancient Egyptian art from the Walters Art Museum and institutions in the United States and abroad.
