Lunch and Learn: Rebuilding the Classical Ideal

During the first decades of the twentieth century, Henry Walters purchased several marble statues formed from mismatched ancient heads and bodies conjoined for the purposes of the antiquities market. This lecture traces the origins of these statues back to nineteenth-century European collections. Over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, changing attitudes towards antiquity and evolving techniques of research and conservation have altered not only the interpretation of these statues, but their material form.  Bring a light lunch to enjoy while Walters Assistant Curator of Ancient Art, Marden Nichols explores the fascinating backstory of our ancient Roman statues.
