Monumental City, Monumental Art: William Henry Rinehart's Woman of Samaria

Date
Thursday, November 8, 2012
Time
05:30 PM–06:30 PM
Monumental City, Monumental Art: William Henry Rinehart's Woman of Samaria

In 1859, William T. Walters gave the young Baltimore sculptor William Henry Rinehart his first real break: the commission of a full-length, ideal sculpture.  TheWoman of Samaria was completed three years later, and is one of several masterpieces by the artist currently on view at the Walters Art Museum.  Jenny Carson (Chair of the Department of Art History, Theory and Criticism at MICA) will track the story of how this beautiful, neoclassical sculpture came to be, from the commission to her eventual display in Mr. Walters' preeminent art collection.

The Group will meet in the Centre Street Lobby at 5:20p. The lecture will take place in the Fourth Floor 19th Century Galleries, Centre Street Building.
