Peabody on the Court Music Series

This Peabody on the Court Music Series concert will feature classical guitarist Jonathan Zwi  . Originally a violinist, Jonathan Zwi began the classical guitar at the age of 18 when he found a passion for the instrument at Indiana University, where he completed his Bachelor of Music degree under the direction of José Antonio López, Julio Ribeiro and Ernesto Bitetti. Jonathan also received degrees in Philosophy and Cognitive Science. In June of 2007, he moved to Brazil to focus on the guitar and re-identify with his heritage and in July he won first place in the 1st Eustáquio Grilo Interational Guitar Competition. While in Brazil, Jonathan was enrolled at the School of Music at the Federal University of Bahia as well as the School of Fine Arts, specializing in printmaking, silkscreen and photography. He has exhibited his work in Brazil and the United States. Currently at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, Jonathan is the Graduate Assistant in Guitar to Manuel Barrueco and in Musicologoy to Dr. Elizabeth Tolbert. He was the recipient of the Richard Franko Goldman Prize for Performance as well as the Presser Foundation Award. He completed his master's degree under the guidance of Ray Chester and is a doctoral candidate under Manuel Barrueco.

The Peabody on the Court Music series of free First Friday noon concerts on the Walters’ Sculpture Court continues a partnership with the Peabody Institute of the The Johns Hopkins University dating from the 1960s. This is the second-to-last performance of the Fall 2013 season. The final performance of the fall/winter season  occurs on December 6.

American Artists Abroad

Tourists, students, expatriates, cosmopolitans, and explorers, American artists traveled widely during the nineteenth century. This exhibition explores this theme and features work by Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, and James McNeill Whistler, among others. It celebrates the completion of a grant-funded project, sponsored by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, to catalogue and photograph more than 600 American paintings, drawings, and miniatures.

Walk-In Tour: Designed for Flowers: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics

Take the opportunity to tour our spring exhibition with its curator, for only the price of an exhibition ticket (free for members)! A private collection of contemporary Japanese ceramics serves as the introduction to the traditional way of flower arranging, called “ikebana.” Works of art in different media from the permanent collection will add social and aesthetic context to the ceramics.
